McAuley - We Can't Give Up On Anything

Northern Ireland international Gareth McAuley has admitted West Brom are no longer in a position to 'give up on anything' in the Premier League.

With defeat to Southampton leaving us cut adrift at the bottom of the top flight table, we go into a clash with Chelsea but with 12 games remaining in the campaign, he knows the squad have to lean on their experience of being an underdog and battling away if we are to get ourselves out of this.

Speaking to wba.co.uk as he spoke to the press following last weekend's defeat, he knew it was time for everyone to stand up and be counted as we go through the final few months of the campaign.

'We can`t give up, we can`t give up on anything. There are 12 games left to get the points to stay in the division, and that`s where our focus is. We have to keep going and we can`t let games slip away.'

As McAuley acknowledges, points are hard enough to come by in the Premier League as it is and he knows we have to address giving away early leads to sides as that just makes the job twice as hard, and with 12 matches left and four points shy of safety, even draws don't do much for us at the moment.

'It`s gutting, yesterday was a massive occasion for the football club, for the Regis family and for everyone else connected. We`d have been delighted with three points for all of those reasons and it`s gutting that we didn`t manage to do that. Having a loss, especially on such a big occasion, is hard to take.'

He did feel that with Chelsea up next, in many ways the pressure would be off so he was looking for an upset.

'We need to go to Chelsea now and have a right go at it. As I`ve said, there aren`t enough games left for us not to be looking at every game as one we need to get something from. We`re running out of games and we need to get those points on the board. Over the years we`ve done quite well against Chelsea so we need to believe we can do that and work hard on it this week.'
