Fletcher Felt Under Appreciated At West Brom?

Former midfielder Darren Fletcher has said he felt under appreciated whilst at West Bromwich Albion and ultimately that's why he moved on to Stoke City over the summer.

Having come in from Manchester United in the January 2015 transfer window, Fletcher was made skipper and went on to make 95 starting appearances with a further two showings from the bench, but he moved on as a free agent last summer which surprised many at the club.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail this week, the Scottish international wouldn't go into details but he said he felt under appreciated in some quarters - and it doesn't sound like he meant the fans.

The 33 year old explained.

'I felt like I was ready for a new challenge, my contract had a little clause in it that gave me the option whether to extend or not, in the player`s favour which is unique. I explored my options and one of the first people who was keen straight away was Sparky. Knowing him, knowing his style of football, knowing the guy he is, knowing that he played under Sir Alex Ferguson, I felt I could relate. I met him, and that hit home straight away.'

Fletcher went on to say.

'I don`t really want to criticise too many people at West Bromwich Albion because I`ve got a lot of time for them there. But things happen in football, and I felt like maybe I wasn`t getting as appreciated as much as I felt like from different areas. I was just ready for something new as well.'

Fans will have to make their own mind up what he means, but he did add about his return to the Hawthorns last month.

'I didn`t know what to expect, I got a fantastic reception and that was nice. It doesn`t happen too often and I was only there a short space of time. I think the fans appreciate how much I tried.'
