Southampton Striker Signs For West Brom

Southampton Striker Signs For West Brom

West Bromwich Albion have completed the signing of Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez this weekend.

The 27 year old forward moves to The Hawthorns for an undisclosed fee - reported as being in the region of £15million - and he's signed a four year deal.

Rodriguez will meet his new teammates on Monday with the players heading back in for pre season training ahead of our eighth straight year in the Premier League and he's on board in time for the pre season training camp out in Austria.

Speaking to wba.co.uk as his signing was announced, Rodriguez joked that it was nice to finally get the deal done after previous attempts by Tony Pulis to sign him fell down.

'After one or two 'near misses' I'm absolutely buzzing to be here. The most important thing for any player is to be wanted - and Tony Pulis and Albion have made it clear just how much they have wanted me to join. That's fantastic for any footballer to hear. I'm genuinely delighted to be joining a club of Albion's stature. The team is full of top players and it's pretty clear that they are also a great set of lads.'

Chairman John Williams added.

'I am delighted to welcome Jay to The Hawthorns. We tried to sign him during the previous two windows and it's third time 'deal done.' Our persistence has been rewarded. Jay is a proven Premier League striker, an England international and a player who will give Tony more attacking options.'

Speaking more in a separate interview, Rodriguez felt there was a lot more to come from him and he was looking forward to proving just that with us now.

'There's a lot to come from me. I am fully over the injury but for whatever reason it didn't work out for me at Southampton last season. I worked hard, I was always willing to do extra work because that's always been my attitude and I was fully fit. But that's football and you just have to deal with it. It's true that there is nothing like regular first team football for that extra sharpness. That's where you get your form and fitness from; playing regularly is the most important thing. But I've come through it and I am lot wiser for it. There's still a lot more to come from me and I want to continue to improve.'

Signing ahead of our pre season return means he has plenty of time to bed in now and he's looking forward to getting going.

'The target is to set our sights as high as possible and be the best that you can be - both as a team and an individual. I obviously was close-up in the two Albion-Southampton games last season and I could see there was a blend of strong players and also flair players. I was impressed and I am buzzing to be joining the group. The team is full of top players and it's pretty clear that they are also a great set of lads. And you look at what has happened to Jake after he joined, getting back into the England squad. My aim is to keep improving, keep working hard and hopefully help Albion get better. If the England squad opens up for me again as a result, that would be fantastic.'
