Irvine - Good Saints Point

Head coach Alan Irvine has said that he was delighted with the point we got today against Southampton, because he knows there's a lot more to come from the team in the future.

Speaking to wba.co.uk following the game, Irvine admitted that whilst the point was welcomed, injuries to Victor Anichebe and Sebastien Pocognoli weren't although it did lead to earlier than expected debuts for Brown Ideye and Jason Davidson and the gaffer was pleased with what he saw from them two.

'I'm very pleased with that display. I thought we were really solid. I saw Southampton play at Anfield last week and they looked a real threat going forward, but we were able to make sure they weren't able to cut us open today. I was pleased about that and pleased with how we passed the ball at times.'

Irvine admits that there were also parts to our game that we still need to improve on and at points he felt we were giving the ball away cheaply, so there's still work to do but it's another basis that we can build on.

'Overall I was happy with the performance, and I'm not unhappy with a point that's for sure.'

The gaffer goes on to say that the meaningful work has only really happened the last few weeks because of injuries and the like, saying at points we had 11 seniors working with youngsters on a daily basis to boost numbers, so he's delighted with how we are performing so far this season.

With record signing Brown Ideye getting 40 minutes under his belt, he also spoke after the game and admitted that he felt it was a good debut, but he was disappointed he didn't score.

'The first header was close and I was unlucky. The second chance, I made a great turn but the keeper came out very quickly and it was a good save.'
