Albion Secure Lescott Transfer

Albion Secure Lescott Transfer

Well this will be a big boost for everyone, Alan Irvine has got his man in the shape of free agent Joleon Lescott.

In somewhat of a coup given the clubs that were reportedly in for the former England and Manchester City centre half, 31 year old Joleon Lescott has today put pen to paper on a two year contract at the club with a performance related year's option on top.

He joins us on a Bosman following his release by Manchester City having had five years with them, and he will meet up with the boys for the first time when we return for pre season training on July 7th.

He becomes new head coach Alan Irvine's first signing of the summer since joining us under a week ago, although we have already added midfielder Craig Gardner as well.

Speaking to wba.co.uk Irvine said.

'I'm delighted we've been able to agree a deal with Joleon. He's an England international and a proven Premier League player, who has been at the top level for a number of years. He's got Premier League and cup medals to his name and has had a fantastic career so far.'

Irvine goes on to say that the club have been working very hard to secure this deal since we found out he was available and was open to moving to The Hawthorns, and he couldn't be more pleased with the work the board and others have done on making this happen.

'Full credit to the board and everyone at the club for getting this done as quickly and effectively as they did. I know Joleon and the type of personality and character he is, in addition to knowing what he can do as a player. He's a great professional and he will add to a number of very good professionals who are already in the squad.'

Irvine said he feels it's important that we didn't go into the Premier League campaign with only three senior centre halves, and he now feels we have four very proven defenders to fill in in the middle and he's delighted with that strength in depth.

'Nobody is guaranteed a place in the team, I have to pick the best two, or sometimes we might play with a three, and I have to work out the ones who can do the best job in any particular game.'

Technical Director Terry Burton added himself that Lescott becomes the second quality signing he feels the club have made this close season and he's hopeful that with the remaining targets we have, we will continue in that vain as we boost the squad again to improve on last season.

'Joleon and Craig will not only add quality to the squad but character as well, which is vitally important for the Premier League challenge.'
