Irvine Excited By Albion Chance

Our freshly appointed new Head Coach, Alan Irvine, has said he's excited by the challenge that lies ahead at West Bromwich Albion and he can't wait to get started at the club.

Speaking to wba.co.uk following the 55 year old's appointment, Irvine said he was relishing his first test as a No 1 in the Premier League.

'I'm absolutely delighted to get the job. I've got a great deal of respect for the club right the way from the first team through to the Academy. The situation at this club is similar to what I went through at Everton when I went there wit David. It's run very sensibly and, as a result of that, any head coach coming in has got a great chance of doing a good job.'

Irvine says that many of our players have already proven they can compete and this level and be a success in terms of finishing well in the league and not being dragged into the battle at the bottom like we were last season, but he also recognises that following departures this summer, we are a small squad and he knows his first job is to help identify targets, and work with the club to get more players in.

'My passion is for coaching and I believe my strength is on the training ground, which is where we need to get the work done.'

With Irvine's record of working with Academy's and helping to develop and nurture talent, our youth players should certainly get a boost from this, and of course the younger players around our first team, should know that Irvine is happy to work with inexperienced players to help bring them up to the level they need to be at in terms of consistency, and with his reputation within the game, as long as targets are correct and we strengthen, whilst not being the 'high profile' appointment many fans were probably hoping for, he should work well with the existing staff and players and get us back to midtableish finishes next season, so we really can put the last year behind us.
