Thorne - Too Good To Be A Squad Player?

The Sunday People are reportedly carrying a number of interesting comments from young George Thorne today.

The highly rated young midfielder has unquestionably been held back following on from the knee injury that hit him the other season, but he has had a very successful loan spell out with Derby County, almost helping them to promotion last season.

Now it sounds like the 21 year old has certainly got his fire for first team action back, but maybe a touch more respect for the club, given we stood by him during his time injured, could be in order here.

'I have had a fantastic time at Derby and I won't rule out a move there. But one thing I will rule out is that I won't be going anywhere to be a squad player.'

Thorne goes on to say that following his knee injury he's taken him almost a year and a half to get back on track.

'But now I've got to this point I'm not prepared to go and sit on somebody's bench or be in somebody's squad and have to wait for my time again. Anyone who knows me will tell you that, compared to how I have been, I'm much happier now. I felt at home at Derby, I felt wanted at Derby, which I certainly didn't at West Brom.'

Adding that during his time with us, as an Academy graduate and a youngster starting to make the progression to first team action in the Premier League, he only felt like a 'squad player' and sometimes 'not even that.'

'I've never really had a sustained spell or a chance and enough's enough. On my mind now is playing football and Derby is a very good option for me.'

Of course this somewhat less than sensible interview comes after Derby chief executive Sam Rush revealed that negotiations have been opened between the two clubs over a potential deal to secure the 21 year olds permanent move to them, so obviously this is designed to 'force our hand' or at least that's how it reads to me.

Quite to what affect I don't know, as it won't change the asking price I imagine, and it's certainly a marked difference from what players say after successful loan spells when they are then determined to return and force their way into the manager's thoughts on the back of that - then again you need a manager in place for that anyway don't you.
