Charges Proven & Suspension For Anelka

Ysterday the FA hearing into Nicolas Anelka's 'quenelle' gesture decided that an 80,000 fine and five match ban was in order.

The 34 year old suffered the punishment following his goal celebration in the West Ham draw and the FA decided that his actions were an 'aggravated breach' of their anti-discrimination rules.

Following the decision he has now been suspended by West Bromwich Albion pending a conclusion to the disciplinary process and their own internal investigation.

A Statement from the club read.

'West Bromwich Albion notes that both charges were proven against Nicolas Anelka at an FA hearing in relation to a gesture he made during the 3-3 draw at West Ham on December 28. The club cooperated fully with the FA's investigation and has allowed due process to take place without prejudicing the outcome of the player's hearing.'

The statement goes on to say that the club and Anelka are now awaiting the full written reasoning behind the panel's decision, and once that is received Anelka will have seven days to decide whether to appeal the current outcome.

'West Bromwich Albion treats very seriously any such allegation which includes any reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion and/or belief. Upon both charges being proven, the club has suspended Nicolas pending the conclusion of the FA's disciplinary process and the club's own internal investigation.'

The statement concludes by the club acknowledging that the FA panel 'did not find that Nicolas is an anti-Semite or that he intended to express or promote anti-Semitism by his use of the quenelle' however the club cannot ignore the offence that it did cause, and nor the damage to Albion's own reputation.

The club will not be making any further comments until the outcome of all procedures now.
