Downing On Vydra & Foster

Caretaker gaffer Keith Downing has said he was delighted to see Matej Vydra grab his first ever Premiership goal, and he was of course delighted to see the return of Ben Foster.

Speaking to wba.co.uk after the game, Downing talked first about Vydra and the impact he had when he came on as a sub, and Downing said he really hoped that the boost of confidence he'll have received from scoring would now allow him to really begin his season following the injury troubles he's had.

'He's waited a long time, he's been persevering in training and he's had a few niggles here and there and it's a big step for him. That will be a massive boost for him. I'm pleased because he's a good lad and works hard during the week, he took his opportunity very well.'

Downing goes on to say that in the last few weeks in training he really has started to find some form and his natural finishing ability has started to come through as he looks a lot fitter and a lot sharper now, so he more than justified his involvement by gaining us a point on the day.

'He arrived at the club without a pre season and he's played a lot of catch up. Recently he's shown he's up to speed and shown that sharpness he's got.'

Of course, Downing also hopes that returning goalkeeper Ben Foster can now also play a big part for us moving forward following his own injury of late, and he credits him for a great double save in the second half against Hull that effectively kept us in the game as if we'd have gone 2-0 behind, it's very unlikely we would've managed to get something out of it given how the game was.

Downing of course, also had words of praise for Boaz Myhill who can consider himself unlucky to have been dropped given his own performances in Foster's absence.

As for the non involvement of Nicolas Anelka and Victor Anichebe, Downing added that Victor had got a slight groin strain and he wasn't going to risk him given the games that we've got coming up over this period, and as for Anelka he wanted to give him a bit longer in training after he returned from injury, so when he is called upon he'll be fitter and ready to play his role well.
