Downing Delighted With Draw

Caretaker boss Keith Downing has said he was delighted to see Albion pick up a point against Hull to bring an end to our run of consecutive defeats.

Albion trailed in the game but Matej Vydra got us the leveller shortly before full time to give us a share of the points.

Speaking to wba.co.uk following the game, Downing said that he hoped that Vydra's effort would have the same galvanising effect on the squad as McAuley's goal against Fulham did last September, and that this would now be the start of an unbeaten run to help lift us back up the table somewhat.

'I just think the difficult week we've had means that goal is a big boost for us. I've likened it to McAuley's late goal at Fulham after we'd had a poor start. I think it was that sort of feeling in the dressing room. I don't mean we're jumping through hoops, but it has certainly stopped the rot and it was important to do that.'

Downing goes on to say that obviously he would've much preferred all three points, but given the run we have been on a point is more than a good start to hopefully help turn that around.

Needing subs to change the course of the game and give us extra impetus up front, Downing says that maybe it leaves him open to criticism for his starting selections as he knows we didn't play well in the first half so we were crying out for change, but I'm not sure that's criticism worthy really. Things don't go to plan, but the changes proved to be the right ones and he should get credit for that.

Hopefully with the consecutive losses now brought to an end, that extra bit of confidence will prove to be the difference and it will free the players up a touch and we will lose the edginess and tension that obviously creeps into players when results go the way they have done for us, and that will then prove to be the difference between one point and all three as we move forward.
