Foster Open For England Return

Steve Clarke has revealed that Ben Foster now thinks the time is right to open himself back up for contention with Roy Hodgson's England squad.

Speaking to wba.co.uk Clarke revealed that Foster spoke to him last week about the change in his thoughts, so it's now up to the former Albion coach to decide whether to offer him a return to the fold for the upcoming qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro, following his international retirement back in 2010.

'His reasons are good. He's had his little time out that he wanted to spend with his young family, which you can understand and respect. He also had some injury problems that he felt needed time during the season to help him recover and get from game to game.'

Clarke adds that having had that time, plus his family growing older and attending school, with Ben being ambitious he thinks this is the right time for him to return to the international scene - should he be selected.

I was a mix of annoyed and curious when he "retired". annoyed that he (and others such as Robinson) quit on their country, when we were genuinely short on GK options after Hart, but I did wonder if it was a lot to do with Capello and his staff as opposed to no longet wanting to play for England. now with Hodgson and GK coach Dave watson, are things better?

I don't think Hart was ever going to be dropped at the point was he, Hodgson said numerous times he'd spoken to Ben about his England choice and he obviously knows him well from his time with us, so a mixture of his kids getting older now, and believing he won't just be benched has probably swung it. Good point about the attitudes of the differing coaching staff though.
