'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Defence Desire Cost Me A Contract

Paul Scharner has said his desire to move into defence permanently probably cost him an extended contract at the Baggies.

Speaking to the Birmingham Post Scharner said that he had requested to only be considered in defence in the future, and with the numbers we have there, it probably made him surplus to requirements.

'It's a shame my contract wasn't extended but this happens in football. I had a text from Dan Ashworth to thank me for my efforts but explaining the club wouldn't be keeping me on. That's fine, I have no problem with the text, it's the same as a phone call. My missions in midfield have been accomplished and I wanted to try something different. I decided to drop back into central defence and West Brom have four players in that position already. I told West Brom of my intentions and that contributed to the club's decision because I knew this might to be possible.'

Scharner signs off by wishing the club the very best for the future and thanked the fans for all their support since he joined.
