Sporting and Technical Director Dan Ashworth has said that there are always risks when appointing staff or singing players, but he doesn't believe Steve Clarke is a gamble.
Speaking to wba.co.uk, Ashworth dismissed any suggestions that our new head coach was a complete gamble and huge risk, pointing to his experience which shows he is perfect for the role.
'When you bring any human being into a new industry or a new place it's a gamble. When Chelsea signed Fernando Torres, a proven Premier League player, it didn't work with them for 18 months. All of us were sitting there thinking is Torres a gamble, no. But he's proof that it hasn't worked. There's an element of risk in everything. But because of his experience, knowledge, the people he has worked with, no, I don't see it as a gamble.'
The club are obviously sticking up for their man here, but it's a bit silly not to describe Clarke as a gamble. It is however better phrased as a calculated gamble because of the way we are structured and because of is experience.
Ashworth won't win over any doubters by referencing Torres, the club need to back the new man and bring in who he wants to he has the support to make this a success for all concerned.
Then we'll find out if it was a gamble that paid off.
