Pompey Bag Thompson

Albion have missed out on signing former Liverpool and Blackburn midfielder David Thompson after the player elected to stay in the Premier League at Fratton Park.

Bryan Robson had wanted to add Thompson to the Baggies squad for our assault on the Championship this season but understandably the player wanted to stay in the Premiership and Portsmouth have offered him that opportunity.

Albion`s interest in Thompson was a little strange as we seem to be blessed with bodies in midfield and with only four places up for grabs it was hard to imagine where he would have fit into the side.

With the news that Albion are not selling any of their first team players it looks as though we may now be keeping the squad together and so the need for Thompson was not as great as first thought.

Albion look to have their defence and midfield covered but there is still a worry concerning our strike-force. Nathan Ellington and John Hartson are the only fit recognised strikers at the club and there are no rumours concerning new strikers arriving for the start of the Championship season.

Time will tell if Robson feels that it is necessary to bring in more striker power but I think last season should be a warning to going into the season without enough goal threat. It could be the difference between automatic promotion and the play-offs or even worse not even making the play-offs, please don`t look foolish two seasons on the trot Albion, goals win games and we need to win games to go up.
