'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Dream Debut for Simon Cox

Simon Cox made his Republic of Ireland debut in fine style last night as he grabbed the final goal in their 5-0 drubbing of Northern Ireland.

Not the greatest introduction for Gareth McAuley eh!

Cox played the full 90 minutes of the Carling Cup of Nations clash and will no doubt be hoping for his second cap against Scotland on Sunday.

Speaking to wba.co.uk following the game, Cox was obviously delighted with his international bow and said.

'I'm pleased, it was a good win for the lads and I capped it off with a nice goal. I wanted to put in a performance that marked the manager's card and see if I can be involved in the next game, and that's what I did.'

Former Liverpool stalwart Ray Houghton was Sky Sports' pundit on the night, and commented on Cox's performance.

'Cox produced a magnificient finish for his goal. He knew exactly what he wanted to do and wasn't afraid to go onto his weaker foot. I actually thought he was man of the match. The biggest compliment I can pay Simon Cox is he didn't look out of place.'

Well done Simon, looks like we've definitely got a little gem on our hands.
