Brunt Remains As Captain

Roy Hodgson has explained his reasoning behind sticking with Chris Brunt as Captain.

Speaking to wba.co.uk Hodgson said that although Scott Carson has been recalled to the team, he believes that Brunt has done more than a good enough job and he also prefers his captain's to be outfield players anyway.

'I think the captain of the team is an important person, if you've made captain it's a big honour, but I don't feel the need to suddenly switch the armband back over.'

Hodgson adds that Brunt was more than willing to relinquish the armband if the manager wished him to, but with his performances of late he saw no reason to do that.

'I prefer an outfield player rather than a goalkeeper, certainly Chris has done well since he's been captain. He said if I wanted to give the captaincy back he would be happy with that, but I see no reason to do that.'

Hodgson goes on to state that the captain should be somebody who inspires the team, but more over one of his reasons for not making a change is simply not to rock the boat at this stage of the season.

'I'm happy to have him as captain, your captain as to be one of your best players and someone who has got the club and the team at heart. Had the captaincy been Olsson's of Carson's I would've been quite happy to accept that aswell.'

Whether Brunt keeps the armband come the new season is still up for debate, but the armband is only a symbol. Leaders will lead the team whether they are wearing the armband or not and we should have enough players capable of doing that with their passion.
