Roy Hodgson has no issues with Marc-Antoine Fortune as he was pleased with his overall performance against Wolves, despite the miss that lives on in fans' minds.
Since the game Hodgson has repeatedly talked about Marc's overall performance on the day and the important role he played in our attacks, but it's just an unfortunate side effect of the role that fans' will only remember the glaring misses, as opposed to all the hard and unspectacular work a striker does during games.
Speaking to wba.co.uk, he said.
'Forwards have to live with negativity, (they) become heroes and villains and are often judged harshly. But I'm afraid if forwards do miss chances, then they are going to incur the wrath of the crowd and people will only remember the lack of control or miss. Yet they can also become heroes by playing badly for most of the match and then scoring a winning goal!'
It's very true of course, but sadly that is the nature of the game and has been since football began.
Ultimately strikers are there to score goals, it's their stock in trade and misses will always be remembered over and above anything else - bar a goal - in a game.
I'm sure Fortune is big enough to suck it up and go again next match myself.
