In an unusual move today West Bromwich Albion confirmed that they had made their final contract offer to Zoltan Gera.
Jeremy Peace, the Baggies Chairman, made the following statement on the official club website:
'After lengthy discussions, we made Zoltan what we regarded as a full and very attractive offer last October.
Zoltan decided not to take up that offer, which has remained on the table all season.
We have since reviewed the terms of our offer to reflect the part he played in the clubs promotion to the Barclays Premiership.
We understand from his representative that Zoltan has received substantial offers from other clubs, but we have now tabled the best deal the club can make and we await his decision'
Hot on the heels of this statement it has emerged that Portsmouth have tabled an offer for the Hungarian international.
Portsmouth can offer Gera European football as well as allowing him to remain in the Premier League. It appears that the spending power of Pompey will prise Zoltan away from the Hawthorns where he is adored by the fans, players and staff.
The other suitors for Gera's signature, Celtic, Everton, Bolton, Middlesbrough, Villa and Benfica will have to act fast if they want to remain in the race.
We can only echo Tony Mowbray's words:
'He is very much appreciated by everyone here and we really hope he stays but if Zoltan decides to further his career elsewhere good luck to him'
